Internet Safety Tips For Parents

  • Post house computer rules on or near the computer. Have anyone who is going to use the computer and the internet sign the rule sheet. <click here to download a sample>

  • Purchase a safeguarding program or investigate options your ISP might offer. <click here for ratings and reviews on various programs>

  • Always, always, always read a web site's privacy policy! Never give personal information before youdo this.



  • Before providing credit card information, make sure the website is using a secure (https) connection.

  • Ensure your child understands what personal information is and why you should never give it to people online.

  • If you child uses chat or e-mail, make sure they understabd the dangers of meeting in person with anyone they first "met" online.

  • Report any offensive or dangerous e-mail and communication to local law enforcement. Remember to not delete the communication; simply turn off the monitor, and contact local police.

  • Keep the computer in an open area in the house.

  • Let your child show you their their favorite sites.
